Use Google Sketchup to visualise 3D shapes to find SA

Sometimes, students find it difficult to visulaise a 3D shape and can forget to include some of the sides when finding the complete surface area.

Yesterday, I ran into this problem with my Year 9 class and decided to use Google Sketchup to create the 3D shapes. Combined with my post on screencasting yesterday, I thought that I should use Screenr to create a short tutorial. N.B. Screenr only allows 5 minutes of recording. You can see the video below, also uploaded to my youtube channel.

  1. Nice idea. I think that some students may still struggle with "which surfaces have the same area?" Or why colour 2 separate areas the same colour?

I worked with strugglers and these are the type of questions they would ask, i.e. what is obvious to us is not necessarily so to them.

Please consider this as feedback rather than criticism. I think that this idea is really good and will definitely forward on. I just wanted to highlight some questions that could arise.

  2. I definitely agree! Thanks for the feedback. The reason why I chose the same colour was so that my students could consider Top/Bottom, Left/Right (the same) and Front/Back. That is, consider the areas viewable from each of these angles. This was, however, with a higher ability class. I'd definitely use different colours for strugglers.
